Houses in ancient Pompeii were made from local stone, covered in plaster, and then had extremely detailed art or poems that related to the room or the family that owned the house. The houses were built very close together, and were usually one floor, although some were two stories which was uncommon. Glass panes were not usually found in Ancient Pompeian houses although they have been found in some of them. Generally, the windows were closed by wooden shutters.
There were openings in the roof in the middle of the house to allow sunlight inside, and there was either a pool for rain water or garden in these areas. The rooms of the house surrounded these courtyard areas.
The floor plan of a house would vary depending on what the person living there did for a living. Politicians would have a large reception area for meeting people, merchants would have a shop along the front of their house facing the street and would live behind and maybe above it.
