Clothing in Ancient Pompeii was very comfortable and was designed extremely well, and were made out of expensive materials. Men generally wore two main garments: The tunica and the toga. The tunica was a short sleeved woolen under garment ( a little bit like a T-shirt), and the toga was mainly designed as a public display garment to look good. A long tunica was considered something that women wore and was avoided by men. Long tunics were generally only worn by men if they were slaves or poor.
The toga was something that was significant to the Roman lifestyle. Different toga's were worn by people with different ranks. So for example the classic toga could only be worn by any citizen of Rome, and no-one else.
Some of the other toga's were:
Toga praetexta-which was mostly for senators and consuls;
Toga pulla was a dark toga worn only in times of mourning;
Toga Candida was worn by candidates for political office. it was whitened as white was important to indicate purity of intention of the candidate;
Toga Picta was a special toga worn by generals in triumphant parades it was purple with gold thread. Julius Caesar wore one of these.
Roman Women wore and inner and outer tunic made from wool or linen. Wealthy women wore expensive imported fabrics such as Chinese silk or Indian cotton. They would sometimes wear a cloak over the top.
There were 2 main types of footwear; calceus, a type of sandal; and coleae, a full shoe completely enclosing the foot-much more like modern footwear. The materials that the shoes were made from depended on wealth and status, but they were mainly leather.
